I had really high expectations coming to Japan and I must say it isn't totally as I expected but it is just so great. Osaka I didn't like too much but I was there too shortly to conclude much about it, but people were ignoring you when you passed them on the street and I didn't like that as it makes me feel as in Europe where people are too busy too look around them.
The first days in Okinawa were a bit difficult as well because people don't speak much english but the last week has been really nice and Kyoto is fantastic. Fukuoka as well I had a really good feeling about the people there and the city.
Kyoto is really big but people live peacefully, there is some harmony here it is very special, it is really relaxing, cars don't use their horns, you got nice neighborhoods with small streets were it is very peacefull, some very romantic paths and gardens. The parks and gardens are just awesome in Kyoto. The culture is so rich. Some people still wear the kimono over here and you got lot's of traditional stuff here like houses, transportation, so many temples, gardens. It's a great harmony between the traditional Japan and the modern city. You can easily escape the modern city and walk in great traditional neighborhoods, parks...You get as well lots of water which always makes a city more lovely. You can bike next to the river or walk and it is so relaxing and beautiful. And that only 30 minutes from the city center by bike. It is really convenient to watch the city by bike and I would really recommend this as there is so much to see and the distances are big.
People are incredibly friendly and it is so safe here it's just amazing, nobody tries to rip you off, it is a very fair mentality, you almost believe there is no criminality here ![]()
Hostels have oftenly no keys and no lockers but you just don't need it at least while you are among Japanese. In Kyoto I went to 2 hostels and one was a big one with keys and lockers but the other one was in a very peacefull neighborhood and there was no keys for the room.
When you don't know your way all people you'll ask try to help you. A lot of people will take you to other people if they don't know. They will even take you to the place or draw you a map to get there. It is amazing. In bars and discotheque people are really friendly and even try to talk to you and you easily make fun with them. You'll be giving a lot of 'give me five' hands to lots of people in Kyoto
Just one example of the many situations: I couldn't find ones my hostel so I just got in a shop and there were 4 employees and I asked them the way and suddenly all 4 were trying to find where I needed to be, took a map and drew on it how to get there. That is just really cool.
So what must you see in Kyoto. First of all you will need at least 4 days as there is soo much to see here and in 4 days you will just got the overall feeling of it and you will still have missed a lot. But 4 days is already good as you can enjoy some neighborhoods as the Philosophy path, the Arashiyama area, the Maruyama park, Gion area...
For the temples there are many of them. From the ones I did and liked: Ryoanji temple, Tenryuji temple (only the garden), Ginkakuji temple, Kiyomizu-dera temple and Kodaji temple (especially the graveyard in the hills).
